Deputy Director of Public Instruction B.V. Mahidas said on Monday that students could understand science topics better with hands-on experience in laboratories.
He was presiding over the inauguration of the science centre at the Government Girls Pre-University College here.
The centre has been sponsored by the Department of Public Instruction and Agastya International Foundation.
Dr. Mahidas said that asking questions about science in class was another method of acquiring knowledge. Many voluntary organisations, including the Agastya Foundation, were joining hands with the Government in improving the standard of education in the State, he said.
The mobile laboratory of the foundation would be visiting all government schools in the district. Students could do experiments in this mobile laboratory, Dr. Mahidas said.
Educationist K.R. Hande, who inaugurated the centre, said that science played a vital role in human life.
Curiosity was an essential quality of scientists. Students should be curious and develop a scientific temper, Mr. Hande said.
Critical and creative thinking and good decision-making were vital in science, he said.
These days, a lot of information was available on the internet. However, students should choose the right kind of information and teachers should help them in this process.
Principal of the college C. Suresh Tunga, project coordinator Shivananda Maiyya, science subject inspector Mukund Bhat, teacher Manorama, and project manager of the foundation Ashok Kumar were present.
